The Children
BY LUCY KIRKWOOD
DIRECTED BY PETER NEWLING
GENRE: DRAMA
PERFORMANCE PERIOD
22 – 31 May 2025
SYNOPSIS
Retired nuclear scientists Hazel and Robin live in a remote cottage on the British coast, grappling with the aftermath of a nuclear disaster. Their routine is disrupted by the unexpected arrival of Rose, a former colleague. As old secrets and moral dilemmas surface, the trio confronts their past actions and the impact on future generations. The play explores themes of responsibility, aging, and the legacy we leave behind.
Note: the role of Rose has been pre-cast.
Hazel – Aged 65+. Retired nuclear scientist and wife of Robin. Very smart, but has a tendency to overthink things. As a result, she comes across as rather fragile, distrustful and brittle. Likeable, but nervous and worried about most things.
Robin – Aged 65+. Retired nuclear scientist and husband of Hazel. Comes across as a bit of a wag – quick with a one-liner or pithy observation. Would be great company at a dinner party. However his good nature covers a deep sense of unease.
