PERFORMANCE PERIOD
4 – 13 September 2025

SYNOPSIS

Following BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS and BILOXI BLUES, this is the poignant and funny conclusion of Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical Eugene trilogy. Eugene and his brother Stanley are trying to break into the world of professional comedy writing, while coping with their parents’ messy and gut-wrenching split. When their material is broadcast on the radio for the first time, the rest of the family is upset to hear a comedic rendition of their own trials and tribulations. How will Eugene and his brother balance their loyalties to their family and to their art?

Roles

Ages are indicative and approximate only. An actor’s true age may be different from the age of the character, if they look and sound right for the part. Please do not hesitate to audition because you are uncertain about the suitability of your age.

Eugene (23)
The play’s narrator and the central character of the Eugene trilogy. Carefree, witty and quick to joke, he is working in the stock room of a music company prior to breaking into showbiz with his brother Stanley. Eugene cares deeply about his family, especially his parents, Kate and Jack.

Stanley (28)
Stanley is highly neurotic, high-strung, and constantly obsessing and worrying over details. He brokers the first opportunity for him and his brother to begin their comedic writing career. The two constantly bicker and play as they collaborate. In Act II, Stanley stands up to his father in their iconic argument.

Kate (approx. 50)
Kate, a strong woman, is Eugene and Stanley’s mother. In addition to being a wife and mother, she is the primary carer for her father, Ben. Kate values family and familial experiences. She is the ultimate nurturer. However, she also values loyalty so when she suspects her husband of being unfaithful, she draws a line and stands her ground.

Ben (approx. 75)
Father of Kate, grandfather to Stanley and Eugene. A born socialist and ardent follower of Trotsky. He lives with his daughter and her family in Brighton Beach. He provides ample comedic fodder for his grandsons. Eugene describes him as ‘the greatest teacher of comedy I ever had … and he didn’t know I was studying him’. Ben cares deeply for his daughters and their families, but due to his upbringing and beliefs is not an affectionate man.

Jack (approx. 55)
Father of Stanley and Eugene. Jack has spent much of his working life as a clothier, making ladies raincoats, He is worn down by the monotony of life and has a brief, extra-marital affair which distresses Kate. He becomes outraged when the radio program his sons write turns out to sound uncannily similar to their own family situation. He and his son, Stanley argue. Jack leaves Kate at the end of the play.

Blanche (approx. 48)
Kate’s ‘well-to-do’ younger sister, by two years, has remarried to a very wealthy man and lives on Park Avenue in Manhattan. She visits Brighton Beach in Act 1 and tries to convince her father to move to Miami to be with his semi-estranged wife.
